Mariko-Sensei’s Japanese Class for Young Children
SUMMERTREE JAPANESE EDUCATION
まりこ先生の日本語教室では日本の歌、お話、手遊びを通してたくさんの美しい日本語に触れていきます。又昔からの日本の子供達の遊び、折り紙やお手玉、あやとり等、手と体を使って日本の文化に親しんで欲しいと思います。日本人は季節を楽しみ自然を敬う心を大切にしている民族です。お正月、節分、ひなまつり、子供の日、七夕、お月見等一年を通して季節の行事にはお話を読んだり、お絵描きや工作をしたりして季節と自然をを慈しむ心を育みます。又シュタイナーの学校で毎日子供達が行うユーリズミー。体と心のバランスを自然に整えるこの体操は専門の教師を呼んで行います。
長く続いたコロナ禍で子供達の生活にも保護者の方にもたくさんの制限がかかったストレスの多い時期でした。美しいTemescal Canyonの森の中でまりこ先生とお友達とのびのびと楽しく日本語を学びましょう！

At the Mariko's Japanese class, children will experience a lot of beautiful Japanese languages through Japanese songs, stories, and Teasobi (plays by moving hands along with songs), in the outdoor environment under the blue sky. They will learn and familiarize themselves with Japanese culture by using their hands and body through traditional Japanese children's play such as origami, beanbags, and string figures (like cat’s cradle).
The Japanese are people who enjoy the season and respect mother nature. Throughout the year, we read stories, draw pictures, and create handcrafts at seasonal events such as New Year's Day and Setsubun in Winter, Hinamatsuri and Children's Day in Spring, Tanabata in Summer, and the harvest full moon viewing in Fall to foster a spirit of embracing the season and nature.
Children will also experience Eurythmy exercise in this class. This exercise is known to naturally balance the body and mind, which is also incorporated as a daily activity at the school of Steiner’s. We will invite a special instructor to teach children the unique movement of Eurythmy.
Over the last year and a half had been a stressful time with many restrictions on children's and parents’ lives due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, it’s time to join Mariko-sensei and friends, and let’s have fun learning Japanese in beautiful Temescal Canyon forest.
大腰まり子先生のご紹介
About Teacher Ms. Mariko Okoshi
まり子先生は秋田県出身。宮城学院女子短期大学の保育科を卒業後、仙台市、千葉県鎌ヶ谷市で幼稚園教諭を務め渡米。ロスアンゼルスでは日系の幼稚園で数年務めた後、2003年よりWestside Waldorf School(Pacific Palisades)で日本語の教師として１７年勤務。このルドルフ シュタイナーの学校では1年生から８年生までの子供それぞれの資質、個性、民族的な学び方の違いに寄り添い、日本語という言語、文化を教えながらアメリカの子供達の成長に関わってきた。この学校で出会ったシュタイナーの教育理念は未来を楽観するのが難しい今の時代の子供達を助ける術になると確信している。Westside Waldorf Schoolを今年６月退職後、本来の専門分野である幼児教育を今までの経験や知識を生かしシュタイナーの基本理念に沿った独自の方法で日本語や日本の文化をこれからの子供達に伝えていきたいと考えている。

Mariko-sensei (Teacher Mariko in Japanese) is originally from Akita Prefecture in Japan. She graduated from Miyagi Gakuin Women's Junior College and studied in childcare course. After she experienced working as a kindergarten teacher from two kindergartens in two cities in Japan (Sendai city in Miyagi prefecture and Kumagaya city in Chiba prefecture), she moved to Los Angeles and worked at a Japanese kindergarten in Los Angeles for several years. From 2003, she started working at Westside Waldorf School (Pacific Palisades), grades 1-8, as a Japanese teacher for 17 years. At this Rudolf Steiner founded school, individualized attention is given to each student’s talent, personality, and difference in learning style. In such unique educational style, she was able to engage the development of students while she was teaching the language and culture of Japan. Through her experience at this school, she is convinced that Steiner's educational philosophy will help give children a skill set to cope well in challenging time even when being optimistic for the future seems not easy. Mariko-sensei just retired from Westside Waldorf School this June, yet her continuous passion of teaching Japanese and Japanese culture to children will be expressed in a new form in this class using her own method in line with Steiner's basic principles along with her years of experience and knowledge of her original specialty in early childhood education.
